2020 EJS Symposium

The fourth annual Equity in the Job Search Symposium took place virtually on May 8, 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Yale community gathered online to hear a virtual presentation shining light on important yet insufficiently recognized women orators and participated in a career management workshop.

Symposium Speakers and Topics

DANA RUBIN

Speechwriter, women’s speech coach, and curator of The Speaking While Female Speech Bank, will share her timely, inspiring research into the hidden history of women’s public speech. Dana received her BA in history from Yale and her MA in English from UT Austin.  Dana founded her own company called Speaking While Female — she gives speeches and leads workshops to teach talented, professional women to step up and share their expertise.

“THE SECRET HISTORY OF WOMEN’S SPEECH: HOW WOMEN’S ORATORY WAS OVERLOOKED AND FORGOTTEN” 10:30-11:30AM

When we think of a powerful speaker from the past, why do we almost always think of a man? Why does oratory by women make up so few entries in “great speeches” anthologies? Not because women of the past haven’t been bold and courageous speakers, using their voices to speak out on crucial issues through the centuries. It’s because all too often, their speeches have been lost, their ideas overlooked, and their influence forgotten.

BRIAN FRENETTE

Senior Associate Director at the Office of Career Strategy, and works with students in Yale’s Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and postdoctoral fellows and associates. Brian received his Bachelors of Arts and Masters in Communication Services from the University of Connecticut.  Prior to joining Yale, Brian worked in career services at Wesleyan University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he oversaw their Field Experience program.

PLAN AND MANAGE YOUR CAREER DEVELOPMENT - 1:00-2:30PM

This workshop helps clarify how the use of career assessment tools such as myIDP or ImaginePhD can help you identify and prioritize professional goals and construct an actionable strategy to achieve them.  We will review the career decision making process, highlight resources aimed at exploring careers, and how to identify concrete actions to accomplish your goals.

RECOGNIZED MENTOR 2020

Mentoring can make all the difference in someone’s job search. For this reason, we solicited nominations from our registrants for individuals at Yale University that have been particularly strong mentors. Below is this year’s recognized mentor:

Maria Tokyyama, an Associate Research Scientist in Akiko Iwasaki’s lab in the Departments of Immunobiology and Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.  Dr. Tokyyama was recognized for initiating the Women in Science at Yale (WISAY) postdoc-faculty mentorship group, which has been an extremely valuable resource and support system for women postdocs in science here at Yale.
